Yoga is a collection of South Asian practices and philosophies that developed over thousands of years. It is much more than physical poses (āsana): it also includes breathwork (prāṇāyāma), meditation, ethics, self-discipline, and ways of understanding the mind.
At its core, yoga asks how we can live with more awareness, less harm (ahiṃsā), clearer thinking, and greater freedom from the habits and attachments that cause suffering.
-
We’ll explore common poses, alignment, props, breathwork, meditation, Sanskrit, philosophy, mantra, and yoga’s broader traditions - all in an approachable, supportive setting.

No, you don't need to be flexible to practice yoga. Flexibility may develop over time, but it's not a requirement - nor is it the goal.
Yoga is about more than how far you can stretch or what poses you can achieve. It's an opportunity to explore movement, connect with your breath, and become more aware of your body.
At Common Light Movement, we believe yoga should meet you where you are. Every body is different, and there's no expectation to move or look a certain way. You don't need to change your body to begin—you can simply begin as you are.

Yoga offers an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with our bodies, and cultivate greater awareness of how we move, breathe, and feel. Yoga can support:
Physical well-being: Improved mobility, flexibility, balance, strength, and body awareness.
Mental and emotional well-being: Reduced stress, greater focus, and improved emotional regulation.
Mind-body connection: Increased awareness of the relationship between movement, breath, thoughts, and emotions.
Rest and restoration: Opportunities to calm the nervous system, release tension, and create space for rest.
Accessibility and adaptability: Movement that can be modified to meet different bodies, abilities, and levels of experience.
Intro to Yoga series coming 2027
At Common Light Movement, our intention isn't to define what yoga should be or position ourselves as authorities on a practice with deep cultural and philosophical roots. Instead, we aim to create an approachable, inclusive space where people can explore movement, build self-awareness, and discover what feels meaningful and supportive to them.
We honor yoga as a practice that extends far beyond physical movement, while recognizing that everyone's relationship with it is personal and continually evolving
